Job Overview
This role is part of a national initiative to safeguard Ghana’s intangible and tangible cultural heritage. The Cultural Heritage Preservation Specialist will work on-site in Cape Coast, collaborating with local communities, historians, and international partners to implement preservation projects, conduct heritage audits, and develop educational programs. The position emphasizes innovation in heritage conservation and aligns with global sustainability goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field assessments of historical sites, artifacts, and cultural practices in Cape Coast and surrounding regions.
- Design and execute preservation plans for at-risk heritage sites, including documentation and restoration strategies.
- Collaborate with local communities to integrate traditional knowledge into conservation efforts.
- Develop educational content and training programs for heritage site visitors and stakeholders.
- Prepare reports for international heritage organizations and government bodies.
Required Skills
- Expertise in cultural heritage laws and international preservation standards (e.g., UNESCO guidelines).
- Proficiency in GIS mapping and digital documentation tools.
- Strong project management and cross-cultural communication skills.
- Experience in grant writing for heritage funding opportunities.
- Ability to work in remote or historically sensitive environments.
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Management, Anthropology, or related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in heritage conservation are highly advantageous.
Experience
3–5 years of professional experience in cultural heritage preservation, with a proven track record in site management, community engagement, or heritage education. Experience in West African cultural contexts is preferred.
Salary
12,000 – 18,000 SSP annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
